Measurement of body fat composition is the key to long-term exercise success. The Omron hand held body fat analyzer is an affordable and easy way to measure body fat in the privacy of your own home. After inputting the data, a measurement can be started by simply holding the grip electrodes and pressing the START button.

(1)  The Omron HBF-306 is very simple to use. Because it uses electrical resitance and calculated “wing span” to measure BF%, it’s possible (due to differences in arm length) that your reading may not be 100% accurate compared to a clinical “immersion” test. However, it is definitely consistent! I also have caliper type pinchers and found them too inconsistent (unless you can pinch the same exact spot each time).

With the Omron HBF-306, you can easily track changes in your body fat % as you progress through your fitness training. You’ll be able to easily tell if your losing fat and/or gaining muscle by monitoring your BF% along with your weight. Check your weight and body fat % first thing in the morning for the most consistent readings. I highly recommend it.

(2) My instructor at the gym uses the pinch type calipers and my doctor used this one. Both were consistent and within 0.2% of each other. The Omron HPF 306 Body Fat Tracker is a lot easier and you don’t have to strip down and be poked and prodded. I love it!!!

(3) When used as directed, the product has given very consistent results. The users not getting consistency are either not holding their arms outstretched in front of them to the same level each time, not using it the same time of the day each day (probably best first thing after awakening for consistency), not gripping it the same each time, just not being consistent themselves in how they use the device. I have taken back to back to back readings, all within 0.3%. The reading increases with successive readings, I believe because the terminals are becoming warm by the grip. But that is not a big deal, one reading is all you need. There is an algorithm to determine if you should be in athletic mode or normal, so whoever has said that didn’t read the instructions.

Anyhow, I was actually surprised at this unit’s consistency. Also, I guessed my fat level to be a certain %, and the unit gave me close to that guess (I’m a personal trainer, so I have a basis for the guess). When I didn’t think I was losing body fat, the numbers stayed the same day by day. When I could tell I was losing fat, the numbers dropped. I am in the 14-15% range now, so not low yet. As such, I can not comment on how it will be at very low body fat % (others that are very lean on here have commented on inaccuracies for them). But at over 10 %, which almost all of us are, it seems to be a good tool.
